Let the Sadness Rise

Our class read the book The Tiger Rising. A wise woman gives Rob the advice to, 'Let the sadness rise on up.' Students created a poem using this advice as one line of their poem. I was truly impressed with their creativity!

Happy Tuesday!

This morning the kids took their Math MAP test on the computers. This used to be called the NWEA test. Everyone did a great job at staying focused and doing their best. We will take the Reading test on Wednesday. Then next Monday, Sept., 21, we will take the Language test. I use the results to help me plan lessons that fit the students' needs. We take these tests again in the spring to see how much growth the students make throughout the year.
Today we will finish the book The Tiger Rising and then on Thursday we will begin the book Twenty and Ten. We have been working on formulating higher level comprehension questions, sequencing the main events of the story, summarizing each chapter, personification, and similes. Ask you child if they've sat on the "hotseat" during reading. The kids have also been writing various forms of poetry using personification and phrases from the story. Wow! What a creative bunch I have this year! I am changing the blog to invited guests only and then, with permission from the students, I will publish some of the video I have taken of them performing their poetry. Many wrote lyrics and free verse poems. All were fabulous!
In math we are working on order of operations, mental math using the Distributive Property, problem-solving, and variables and expressions.
We will have a social studies test this Thursday. The students will be allowed to use the notes the took in their workbook.
As you can see, a lot is going on in the 6th grade. I'll update the blog several times a week.
Have a fantastic day!
